What are the ingredients for making maki?

There are a large number of recipes for making maki, so the possibilities are many. Generally, the ingredients needed to make Japanese rolls are: raw fish (salmon, tuna, sea bream, surimi), nori sheets, Japanese sushi rice and cucumber or avocado. You will also need ingredients to season your maki: soy sauce, wasabi, ginger or even miso sauce. Discover our Japanese grocery category here.

California Rolls and makis, what are the differences?

California Rolls are a rather special type of maki. Indeed, the nori seaweed is rolled up inside the maki covered with rice and sesame seeds rather than outside like traditional maki rolls. Very often, the Califorina Rolls are garnished with cucumbers, crabs and avocado. Discover our free recipe here.

What are the different ingredients and steps needed to make Japanese sushi and maki?

Sushi and maki are very popular Asian dishes. To prepare sushi rolls, you must first cook Japanese rice. Once cooked, rice vinegar is added to make vinegar rice. Then spread a sheet of nori seaweed on a bamboo mat, and spread the vinegared rice on it. You can add different toppings such as shrimp, crab, smoked salmon, tofu strips, salmon avocado tartare, cabbage or even mango slices. You can also add sesame seeds to give the rolls some crunch. Then roll everything with the bamboo mat, and cut the rolls into slices with a sharp knife. Sashimi, on the other hand, is sliced raw fish served with white rice and radishes. They can also be served with soy sauce and mayonnaise. Sashimi is usually made from smoked salmon or tuna. To prepare sushi and maki, it is important to choose fresh and quality ingredients, and to cook the sushi rice in a sticky and slightly sweet way. You can use a rice cooker for this. It is also important to dip your fingers in cold water before handling the rice, to prevent it from sticking to your hands. Nod leaves and bamboo mats are essential accessories for the preparation of sushi and maki. Finally, to accompany sushi and maki, you can serve yakitori, marinated chicken skewers, as well as seaweed and shrimp salads.

What are the steps in making maki?

In Japanese cuisine, the preparation of sushi is an art. There are several types of sushi, including the famous maki sushi, prepared with a dried nori sheet and sticky round rice. To make sushi, it is important to cook the rice well in a pan and spread it in a bowl to let it cool. Then, you have to cut the ingredients into thin strips, such as the shrimp, the omelette, the raw salmon, the red tuna, or even the eel. For sashimi, the fish is cut into sections or bite-size pieces. Then just lay a sheet of nori on the mat, spread the sushi rice over it and add the ingredients. To roll the maki sushi, wrap the nori sheet with the ingredient sticks, taking care to tightly wrap it. It is also possible to make sushi with a sushi kit, which contains a bamboo mat and a wooden spatula. Rice bites can be served with sake or green tea at a Japanese restaurant. Sushi is often served with soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, or mayonnaise made with sesame oil and sesame seeds. Sushi is usually presented on a bowl of rice or a lettuce leaf and can be garnished with tomato, strips of nori seaweed or sesame seeds. Yakitori are also very popular in Asian cuisine, these skewers of meat or fish are cooked over low heat or boiling and can be drizzled with soy sauce or sake.
