Ingredients needed for Airfryer Sushi Recipe

  • 1 cup sushi rice (or Japanese rice)
  • 1 ½ cups water
  • 3 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of salt
  • 4 sheets of nori
  • 200 g fresh salmon or tuna
  • ½ avocado
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or sesame oil
  • Soy sauce (to accompany)
  • Wasabi and pickled ginger

Preparing sushi rice

  • Rinse the rice : Start by thoroughly rinsing the sushi rice in a sieve until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and helps achieve the perfect texture.
  • cooking rice : Place the rinsed rice in a saucepan and add 1 ½ cups of water. Cover and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat and cook for about 10-15 minutes. Then remove from heat and let sit, covered, for another 10 minutes.
  • Season the rice : In a small saucepan, combine rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Heat over low heat until sugar and salt dissolve completely, then set aside to cool. Once rice is ready and slightly cooled, gently stir in rice vinegar mixture to season rice.

Prepare the fresh ingredients

For this recipe, we will be using fresh salmon, but you can also opt for tuna, avocado, or even grilled vegetables. Make sure to cut the ingredients so that they can be easily rolled up in the nori sheets.

  • Cut the fish : Cut the salmon or tuna into thin, long slices so that they fit easily into the sushi roll.
  • Prepare the avocado : Cut the avocado into thin slices or sticks so it adds perfectly to sushi.

Assembling the sushi

  • Lay the nori sheets : Place a sheet of nori on a flat surface, preferably a bamboo mat to make rolling easier.
  • Spread the rice : Using slightly damp hands, spread a thin layer of rice onto the nori sheet, leaving about 1 cm of margin at the top of the sheet.
  • Add the toppings : Place pieces of salmon, slices of avocado and any other ingredients of your choice (like grilled vegetables) in the center of the rice.
  • Roll the sushi : Carefully roll the nori sheet from the bottom, using the bamboo mat to help form a compact roll. Make sure to tighten it well without crushing the rice.

Cooking sushi in the Airfryer

  • Prepare the rolls : Lightly brush the sushi rolls with olive or sesame oil to make them golden and crispy.
  • Cooking in the Airfryer : Preheat the air fryer to 180°C. Place the sushi rolls in the air fryer basket and cook for about 6 to 8 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and crispy.
  • Check the cooking : The rolls should be lightly browned on the outside while remaining tender and soft on the inside. Adjust the cooking time according to the size of the rolls and the power of your appliance.

Tasting and presentation

Once your sushi is cooked to perfection, it’s time to cut it into pieces. Use a sharp knife to cut each roll into 6-8 equal pieces. Serve them with a little soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger for an extra touch.

Tips and advice

  • Topping variations : You can vary the toppings according to your preferences. Vegetables like cucumber, carrots or peppers can also be added for a delicious vegetarian sushi.
  • Sushi tempura : If you like your sushi even crispier, you can dip your rolls in tempura batter before cooking them in the air fryer.
  • Cooking temperature and time : Cooking times may vary depending on the size of the rolls and the brand of your air fryer, so it is important to monitor the cooking to avoid overcooking your sushi.
