Sushi is a Japanese specialty popular worldwide. It typically consists of pieces of raw fish and vinegared rice, wrapped in nori sheets. Find recipes for air fryers and All the tips for cooking with this air fryer

Ingredients needed for the Airfryer sushi recipe

  • 1 cup of sushi rice (or Japanese rice)
  • 1 1/2 cups of water
  • 3 tablespoons of rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of salt
  • 4 sheets of nori
  • 200g of fresh salmon or tuna
  • ½ avocado
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil or sesame oil
  • Soy sauce (to serve)
  • Wasabi and pickled ginger

Preparing sushi rice

  • Rinse the rice Start by thoroughly rinsing the sushi rice in a sieve until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and ensures a perfect texture.
  • Cooking rice Place the rinsed rice in a saucepan and add 1 1/2 cups of water. Cover and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat and simmer for about 10-15 minutes. Then, remove from the heat and let it rest, covered, for another 10 minutes.
  • Season the rice In a small saucepan, combine the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Heat over low heat until the sugar and salt have completely dissolved, then let it cool. Once the rice is cooked and slightly cooled, gently stir in the rice vinegar mixture to season it.

Prepare the fresh ingredients

For this recipe, we'll use fresh salmon, but you can also opt for tuna, avocado, or even grilled vegetables. Make sure to cut the ingredients so they can be easily wrapped in the nori sheets.

  • Cut up the fish : Cut the salmon or tuna into thin, long slices so that they fit easily into the sushi roll.
  • Prepare the avocado Cut the avocado into thin slices or sticks so that it adds perfectly to the sushi.

Assembling the sushi

  • Place the nori sheets : Place a sheet of nori on a flat surface, preferably a bamboo mat to facilitate rolling.
  • Spread the rice : Using your slightly wet hands, spread a thin layer of rice on the nori sheet, leaving about 1 cm of margin at the top of the sheet.
  • Add the toppings Place pieces of salmon, slices of avocado and any other ingredient of your choice (such as grilled vegetables) in the center of the rice.
  • Roll the sushi Gently roll the nori sheet from the bottom, using the bamboo mat to help you form a compact roll. Make sure to roll tightly without crushing the rice.

Cooking sushi in an air fryer

  • Prepare the rolls Lightly brush the sushi rolls with olive or sesame oil to make them golden and crispy.
  • Cooking in the Airfryer Preheat the air fryer to 180°C. Place the sushi rolls in the fryer basket and cook for approximately 6 to 8 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and crispy.
  • Check the cooking The rolls should be lightly browned on the outside while remaining tender and soft on the inside. Adjust the cooking time according to the size of the rolls and the power of your appliance.

Tasting and presentation

Once your sushi is cooked to perfection, it's time to cut it into pieces. Use a sharp knife to cut each roll into 6 to 8 equal pieces. Serve them with a little soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger for an extra touch.

Tips and advice

  • Filling variations You can vary the toppings according to your preferences. Vegetables such as cucumber, carrots or peppers can also be added for a delicious vegetarian sushi.
  • Tempura sushi : If you like your sushi even crispier, you can dip your rolls in tempura batter before cooking them in the air fryer.
  • Cooking temperature and time Cooking times may vary depending on the size of the rolls and the brand of your air fryer. It is therefore important to monitor the cooking process to avoid overcooking your sushi.

Conclusion

The air fryer offers a fresh take on traditional sushi, creating an innovative texture that's crispy on the outside while preserving the creaminess of the rice and the freshness of the fillings. This quick and easy cooking method is ideal for those who want to experiment with sushi variations while staying true to the essence of this classic Japanese dish. Whether you're a seasoned Japanese food enthusiast or a beginner, this recipe is a great way to add a unique touch to your meals.
